Matthew Dodder, Executive Director, Santa Clara Valley Bird Alliance - This revised and expanded Dragonflies of California by Kathy Biggs and Sandra von Arb is a triumph of field guide design. [It is] portable, practical, and a genuine pleasure to use. This new edition builds beautifully on the success of earlier versions, featuring stunning images of both male and female for each species, nymphs for each genus, and thoroughly updated range maps throughout. [This is] evolution at its best: familiar in format but refined and enriched in every way.
My interest in dragonflies began over a decade ago when I stumbled upon the first pocket-sized edition of this gem at my local Audubon chapter. Since then, my fascination with Anisoptera (my library—has grown significantly) thanks in large part to Kathy Biggs clear, approachable guides.
While other dragonfly books may cover larger regions, more species, or the minutiae visible only when an insect is in hand, this slender volume strikes the perfect balance. It offers just enough detail to support confident field identification without overwhelming the reader. In the field, no other guide matches its utility.
Whether you are a seasoned enthusiast or just beginning your journey into the world of dragonflies, this newly expanded edition is the guide to carry. I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone drawn to these beautiful, fascinating creatures.

I got mine and it is awesome. So user friendly and comprehensive, which do not always go together.
For an outstanding reference that will not bowl you over with scientific terminology but will not talk down to you either, get this guide

Very happy with mine. You both did a great job! I particularly appreciate the Photo Quick Guides, & the comprehensive index.

Just got my copy. Love it! It's a hoot comparing it to the 2000 edition, Common Dragonflies of California. So much more thorough treatment, with maps and other important info. Flight periods for many species are MUCH longer, presumably a combination of climate change and more data points in the intervening 24 years. Love the expanded treatment. Hope there's enough interest to produce a companion Damselflies version; that's the only thing I miss about the older book.
