This is a male Shadow Darner, Aeshna umbrosa, collected as the voucher specimen for Alpine County, CA at Lake Alpine on Setpember 7, 2008.

top view - note lack of spots on top of segment 10 and 3 cells in anal hindwing triangle

side view - note simple paddle shaped appendages with a small spine at the tip

underside view - note the paired blue spots
