Male Shadow vs Paddle-tailed Darner


The photos below compare a male Shadow and a male Paddle-tailed Darner. The photos were taken at Lower Lily Pond in Modoc County, Sept. 5, 2009 by Steve Rottenborn.
The Shadow Darner's side stripes are perhaps a bit thinner than average, but the three shots below are excellent for comparisons. Thanks for their use Steve!
In all photos the Shadow Darner is above or on the left and the Paddle-tailed below or on the right.
These two species can appear quite similar. ALWAYS check the underside! The top of s10 (dark or marked) is also helpful.
