California's Year 2020*

Dragonfly Reports

*This year, ONLY First and Last dates by species and new county/state records &/or new flight dates were tracked on the website,

plus information obtained in conjunction with these reports.

All information is also kept on an Excel Chart. Please contact me if you’d like a copy. Kathy Biggs

I encourage you to click on prior years and search them if you are interested in finding places with great ode diversity.

I encourage all people interested in wildlife to upload their photos to iNaturalist and/or Odonata Central.

Sightings are listed in order from MOST recently to LEAST recently seen!
Please send your sightings, with date, county and location as displayed below to Kathy Biggs and/or the CalOdes Dragonfly discussion group  and/or iNaturalist.com

THANK YOU

Note: A Facebook group, Western Odonata is a wonderful place to get help with IDs, etc. Check it out - https://www.facebook.com/groups/WesternOdonata/

Key:
Species will be posted using both the Common Name or the Scientific Name
To contact the person making the sighting, email Kathy Biggs.
COUNTY RECORDS are underlined,in red text and preceeded by !!  (any new, but prior to 2020 records are listed at the bottom of the page)
             OC= Odonata Central
* = first/last sighting of species of year in CA  (FOY or  LOY)
** = new flight data for species in CA
# = probably a migratory event
MO = many observers (usually means a field trip full of observers)

92 species (out of the 115 species known to have occurred in California) have been reported to this site or gleaned from data collected on iNaturalist or the Western Odonata Facebook page, as flying in California in the 2020 season as of the most currant date below.

25 new California County records (many of these this year found by searching iNaturalist’s history) and

1 STATE record have been reported/discovered/upgraded this year. (This #  may include upgrades from previous ‘sighting only’ & photo records). County records are underlined and in red text, preceded by a !! to make them easier to find.

In 2015, new county records were found by accessing specimens in museum collections or late reports. All were entered at Odonata Central by “Calif Records”.

`Sighting only' records need further documentation, but please report them so we can try to get confirmation.

County records should be substantiated with specimen (preferable) or photo and notes. [note: not all species are identifiable by photos]

Report new county records and early/late flight dates to Kathy Biggs bigsnest at sonic.net & Odonata Central (http://odonatacentral.bfl.utexas.edu/records/US_new_records.asp) for verification

EVERYONE is encouraged to record flight data for their home &/or favorite county and to upload such files to CalOdes &/or Odonata Central or iNaturalist: https://groups.io/g/CalOdes/files, OdonataCentral.com and/or iNaturlaist

Black Petaltail – 6 males

Boreal Bluet Enallagma borealis many, one in hand, we enjoyed watching the males tow a female to a rooted plant that reached the surface. He’d allow her to grab it and then she would proceed to back up underwater. When she was fully submerged, he’d release her. This is how she would avoid the attentions of the other males. But when a female surfaced and needed help to break the surface tension, she’d be mobbed by about 10 males!!

a very small seasonal pond along West Camino Cielo, the road that runs along the spine of the coastal Santa Ynez Mountains, accessed from Refugio Road.

The water level had dropped a fair amount, but the numbers of Black Spreadwings had gone the other way. We were gobsmacked by what we found. There were well over 200 individuals. We counted more than 80 pairs in wheel and tandem, and these were the insects visible from one spot only. The cropped photos give some idea of the numbers. All spreadwings netted, photographed, or viewed through binoculars were Black Spreadwing. I presume that they are laying eggs on (or in?) the emergent vegetation, and these eggs will survive after the pond dries and then the first winter rains arrive (usually November or December). According to Jim Johnson, "this is standard operating procedure for many spreadwings in that habitat."

Mark Bright photographed spreadwings at this same location last summer, and while the photos are not conclusive, they are very much suggestive of the same species, so it's likely they've been around for a while.

Other species present included

Wandering Glider (1)

Common Whitetail (1)

Western Forktail (1)

Common Green Darner (1)
