THANK YOU

Note: A Facebook Western Odonata group is a wonderful place to get help with IDs, etc. Check it out - https://www.facebook.com/groups/WesternOdonata/

Key:
Species will be posted using either the Common Name or the Scientific Name, whichever the sender uses (inc. using both),
but all first and last sightings of the year, county records, and new flight data will be posted using both names.
To contact the person making the sighting, email Kathy Biggs.
COUNTY RECORDS are underlined and in red text  (any new, but prior to 2019 records are listed at the bottom of the page)
             OC= Odonata Central
* = first/last sighting of species of year in CA  (FOY or  LOY)
** = new flight data for species in CA
# = probably a migratory event
MO = many observers (usually means a field trip full of observers)

99 species (out of the 115 species known to have occurred in California) have been reported to this site or gleaned from data collected on iNaturalist or the Western Odonata Facebook page, as flying in California in the 2019 season as of the most currant date below.

9 new California county records have been reported/discovered/upgraded this year. (This # includes upgrades from previous ‘sighting only’ & photo records). County records are underlined and in red text, preceded by a !! to make them easier to find.

In 2015, new county records were found by accessing specimens in museum collections or late reports. All were entered at Odonata Central by “Calif Records”.

`Sighting only' records need further documentation, but please report them so we can try to get confirmation.

County records should be substantiated with specimen (preferable) or photo and notes. [note: not all species are identifiable by photos]

Report new county records and early/late flight dates to Kathy Biggs bigsnest at sonic.net & Odonata Central (http://odonatacentral.bfl.utexas.edu/records/US_new_records.asp) for verification

EVERYONE is encouraged to record flight data for their home &/or favorite county and to upload such files to CalOdes: https://groups.io/g/CalOdes/files &/or OdonataCentral.com

#Half Moon Bay

from SouthBayBirds

There is an offshore wind flow event going on right now.

Air is streaming west out of the Golden Gate and offshore from the Peninsula, particularly from the peak on to the coast.

There is nearly no wind at the Bay itself right now.

But this has pushed migratory insects to the coast!

It is also hot out here right now. ….

the main event is that lots of California Tortoiseshell Butterflies are seemingly coming off the ocean and moving SE, reorienting
after being pushed farther west than they needed to be.

There are good numbers of Variegated Meadowhawk, a migratory species that
collects on the coast when we have offshore winds during their migratory period.

I quickly crossed the Santa Margarita River to reach a scrub hilltop above it looking for Serpent Ringtail.  Two were found on separate peaks.  I explored Sandia Creek yesterday which no ringtails present, they have not been found along the river either.  It’s a mystery what water source they use here.  Full sun 89f high 10:00-12:45 mostly sagescrub/chaparral with brief crossing of river and riparian

We spent the last 2.5 hours of the day at the marshy edge of Goose Lake, at the west end of State Line Park Road, which straddles the California-Oregon border. Yellow Rail (a bird) has become regular in summer here and we heard 3 (2 in CA, 1 in OR) but were not lucky enough to see any fly during the end of the hot day, as others have seen. However, where we parked at marsh-edge and stood for 2.5 hours was just chok-a-blok with perched and flying meadowhawk as far as the eye could see over the shallow grassy marsh-edge of Goose Lake. While we were very focused on birds here we did note:
spreadwing, perched probably Spotted, pending photo review -- one or two

Lake Los Carneros in Goleta

Last year the first 12-spotted skimmers for showed up at Lake Los Carneros in Goleta, a male on August 17th, with a female seen the following day. I went looking for odonates at LLC at lunchtime today, and found what was either a male 8-spotted or 12-spotted at the far east end, which was by far the best area for odes. The skimmer was incredibly fast so it was hard to get a good look at the wings, and it was never seen to land. After I was joined by N. Lethaby, we got pretty good looks and are both confident it is a

along the middle Santa Ynez River along Paradise Roa

spent the late morning/early afternoon. My goal was to try to locate Pale-faced Clubskimmers, seemingly extirpated in the county following the drought, and also to see how populations of other odonates are rebounding. I was unable to find clubskimmers and was disappointed in the low numbers of odonates overall. I visited most of the "traditional" good spots (where habitat has changed because of the heavy rains/river flow), and tried a couple of "new" wetland areas (places that had been dry over the previous several summers). The latter held very little apart from a few bluets. The highlight was finding two Gray Sanddragons, a species I missed along the river last year. Notable by their absence were any forktails, Desert Firetail, Western River Cruiser, Giant Darner, and Serpent Ringtail.
California Dancer -- 1 (usually many)
Lavender Dancer -- 1 (the day previous to my visit, Mark Bright checked Upper Oso, where this species used to be common. He saw none.)

Orr Lake and the wet meadow before the lake - Unfortunately the day we chose to go to Orr Lake, north of Weed was today as it was an overcast, cool day.

There were no Odes at all to be found at our usual 1st stop which is along Bray Rd, where a creek flows under the road.

Our 2nd stop is after the turn off to Orr Lake where there is a wet meadow and access to Butte Creek. We had better luck there although it was too wet for us to get to the creek. The Forktails were abundant and as it warmed up, we began seeing Meadowhawks (most still quite young) and 12-spotted Skimmers. Our list for that site:

Speadwing sp - 2 seen poorly

*Western Red Damsel Amphiagrion abbreviatum - 4 males seen by Celise

Vivid Dancer - a few, and only a few even showing a hint of blue color

No/Bo Bluets - a few males & females

Pacific Forktail - both sexes and all stages of development

Western Forktails - ditto

12-spotted Skimmers -  a dozen or more

8-spotted Skimmers - slightly more than 12-spots

Darner sp - seen poorly, but probably Co. Green Darner

It didn't seem like 13 species! And we were disappointed not to find Gt. Basin Snaketail.

Our 3rd and last dragonfly stop was Orr Lake itself. 4800', very full of emergent vegetation. No/Bo Bluets - some males & females

Pacific Forktail - both sexes and all stages of development

Western Forktails – abundant & ditto

Chalk-fronted Corporal - 1 male seen well by Dennis, only the 2nd time the species has been recorded at the site

Dot-tailed Whiteface - 1-2 males seen

12-spotted Skimmers - many

8-spotted Skimmers – abundant

Blue Dasher – 1 seen by Dennis (he went further along the shore than the rest of us)

Red-veined Meadowhawk - a few

Co. Green Darner

Blue-eyed Darner

Our total for the day was 15 species, which is OK, but this site usually has many more species of Meadowhawks and Darners. We'll be going back.

Observed something new today - along with the migrating Painted Lady butterflies, there are 12-spotted Skimmers migrating. Maybe one skimmer for every 2 dozen butterflies! Coincidentally, the 12-spot population at our pond went up from
Twelve-spotted Skimmer - 3 males and a female to 5 males and a female.
The next day 5 emerged from the pond, but no adults showed up!

Spot-winged Gliders Pantala hymenaea… All those I got decent looks at were [this species]

Great Spreadwings Archilestes grandis - 4. These are presumably ones associated with 2018 fall flight of this species. Given that there was virtually no rain until March last year, one wonders if the flight was much later than normal last year. [LOY – 2018 – but see Feb 5]
