THANK YOU

Note: A Facebook Western Odonata group is a wonderful place to get help with IDs, etc. Check it out - https://www.facebook.com/groups/WesternOdonata/

Key:
Species will be posted using either the Common Name or the Scientific Name, whichever the sender uses (inc. using both),
but all first and last sightings of the year, county records, and new flight data will be posted using both names.
To contact the person making the sighting, email Kathy Biggs.
COUNTY RECORDS are underlined and in red text  (any new, but prior to 2017 records are listed at the bottom of the page)
             OC= Odonata Central
* = first/last sighting of species of year in CA ) FOY or  LOY)
** = new flight data for species in CA
# = probably a migratory event
MO = many observers (usually means a field trip full of observers)

101 species (out of the 114 species known to have occurred in California) have been reported to this site or gleaned from data collected on iNaturalist or the Western Odonata Facebook page, as flying in California in the 2018 season as of the most currant date below.

22 new California county records have been reported/discovered/upgraded this year. (This # includes upgrades from previous ‘sighting only’ & photo records). County records are underlined and in red text, preceded by a !! to make them easier to find.

In 2015, new county records were found by accessing specimens in museum collections or late reports. All were entered at Odonata Central by “Calif Records”.

`Sighting only' records need further documentation, but please report them so we can try to get confirmation.

County records should be substantiated with specimen (preferable) or photo and notes. [note: not all species are identifiable by photos]

Report new county records and early/late flight dates to Kathy Biggs bigsnest at sonic.net & Odonata Central (http://odonatacentral.bfl.utexas.edu/records/US_new_records.asp) for verification

EVERYONE is encouraged to record flight data for their home &/or favorite county and to upload such files to CalOdes: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/CalOdes/files &/or Odonata Central.

It was quite smoky but the day got up to 72F. None-the-less the Odes were very scarce.

Northern Spreadwing, Lestes disjunctus - 1 female in hand

Pacific Forktail, Ischnura cervula - 1 male and 1 female in hand

*Western Forktail, I. perparva - 1 male and 1 female photographed [last report of 2018]

*Variable Darner, Aeshna interrupta - female in hand, and male seen LOY

Common Green Darner, Anax junius - at least one observed

Blue-eyed Darner, Rhionaeschna multicolor - one male in flight

White-faced Meadowhawk, Sympetrum obtrusum - a male and several females in hand, only a dozen or so altogether

A highlight for the group was having a Darner and a Forktail in hand at the same time for comparisons.

Amazingly no Striped Meadowhawks were seen although at other spots at similar elevations last week they were everywhere!

Also seen: several small Garter Snakes (Yellow-lined?), a Blue-tailed Skink

#Red Rock Skimmers - a significant movement of along the coast of Santa Barbara.

Yesterday approx. 30 flew east in 15 minutes along the edge of the slough at Goleta Beach County Park,

and this morning about the same number were seen flying east along the breakwater at the Santa Barbara Harbor.

None of them stopped to visit. Bill Murdoch, who lives in Montecito, and about 1/2 mile inland, reported the same species visiting his small pond--a first for him.

The ratio of males to females was about 30/70.

Other species present both days were

Variegated Meadowhawk

Red Saddlebags

Blue-eyed Darner.

The temp. both days was in the high 80s/low 90s.

Flames Skimmers-  Libellula saturata - 2 males, perched in the cattails.

Western Pondhawk -Erythemis collocata- 1 mature male, perched over the pond.

Black saddlebags Tramea lacerata- several pairs flying in tandem and ovipositing in water.

Female had no yellow and wasn’t “dropped”, was held but a fish almost got them so it was aborted.

Lake Los Carneros in Goleta … for about 25 minutes.

3 Red-tailed Pennants were the highlight, although this species seems firmly established along the south coast of the county now.

Blue Dashers were common but didn’t see any other odes except for a damsel sp.

Flame Skimmers have become much rarer at this location during the drought and this year seems terrible for migrant odes.

I did have 1-2 of both saddlebags here a couple of weeks ago, but I am not sure I have seen a glider all summer!

Tim Manolis and MO -We  saw (from 9-12 am on a warm, sunny day) on Bear Creek near Hwy 20

California Dancer -- 15-20 of these, most by the Wilbur Springs bridge.

Vivid Dancer -- 2-3, near the bridge.

Sooty Dancer -- 8 of these, nice looks on rocks.

Tule Bluet -- good numbers seen.

Familiar Bluet -- at least a few males seen fairly well, probably more present.

Northern Bluet -- one male netted, probably others seen.  I didn't focus a lot of attention on bluets, but we saw lots of them.  These three species are the ones we typically see in numbers at these sites.

Black-fronted Forktail -- 16 or so seen.

Western Forktail -- 25 or so seen.

Desert Firetail -- at least two nice red males seen.

Blue-eyed Darner -- 2 patrolling males.

Green Darner -- 6-8, most males but a couple of females, too.

*Giant Darner Anax walsinghami  -- 8 or so patrolling males.LOY

White-belted Ringtail -- 2-3.

*Gray Sanddragon Progomphus borealis -- at least 12, probably more. LOY

Pale-faced Clubskimmer -- 12 or so.

Western Pondhawk -- 10.

Widow Skimmer -- 15-20?

Twelve-spotted Skimmer -- 6-8.

Flame Skimmer -- 30-40?

Wandering Glider -- 2-3

Spot-winged Glider -- 2-3

Black Saddlebags -- 4-5

Variegated Meadowhawk -- 100s

Things we missed that I saw on this trip during the same weekend in July 2016 and July 2017 were:

American Rubyspot (2016), California Darner (2016), W. River Cruiser (both years), Desert Forktail (2017), Pacific Forktail (2017), Red Rock Skimmer (2017).  Some of these, particularly the forktails, could have been there and we just missed them. Leslie Flint had the rubyspot and the river cruiser just a few days before the trip.  So diversity in the area seems to be holding up.

Alan Wight arrived at Bear Creek just as Tim and MO were leaving.

He covered Bear Creek from Highway 20 to the Wilbur Springs Road bridge & was happy to finally make it to this great spot! Species seen were:

I visited sections of the middle Santa Ynez River for the first time this summer.

Temps were in the mid-nineties. Most of the areas I checked consisted of stagnant pools.

I found one trickle of water that hosted a few damsels.

Yet another year of drought seems to have pushed some species over the edge, at least for the time being.

This section of the river has been good for Giant Darners, Gray Sanddragons, and Serpent Ringtails, but I saw none of these today.

Last year I saw one ringtail and one sanddragon.

One dragon I was very glad to see was

I looked for San Francisco Forktails at known locations in and near BloomfieldI found at least three in the creek just south of Stormy’s Restaurant in Bloomfield. There was one male along this same section of creek just north of Petaluma Valley Ford Road. There were at least five near the north end of Carmody Road where a creek goes under Petaluma Valley Ford Road.  This is a location where I found some last year. A new location today was along Fallon Road about a quarter mile west of its intersection with Petaluma Valley Ford Road where a creek goes under the road.  On the south side here, I s! aw and photographed one blue female and one or more males.  This location differs in that it is in the Estero de San Antonio drainage while the others are in the Estero Americano drainage. I should add that I am calling these San Francisco Forktails in this email though I didn’t get good looks at the male appendages to eliminate Black-fronted Forktail.  San Francisco Forktail is the expected species in this part of the county based on past observations.  I took many photos, though I’m not sure any show the appendages well enough for identification.  They do show the more extensive blue on the males near the abdomen tip that San Francisco Forktails tend to have.

Also, one male Exclamation Damsel at Blucher Creek where it crosses Bloomfield Road

Black Petaltail Tanypteryx hageni - two males OC# 479918

This is the exact spot where, in 2004, I saw a pair in wheel and then a female ovipositing into the wet area. The BLM cleanup happened not long after this and Kathy Biggs worked with BLM to protect this one small wet area in the hopes that Black Petaltails would continue to use it.  I believe that Kathy was the first to find this species near here in 2003.  I don’t recall any sightings reported here since 2004.

If you search for this species here, please no collecting and try not to disturb them as they only occur in two locations in Sonoma County (Pine Flat Road and The Cedars).

Here is a photo of one of the males:  https://flic.kr/p/HHfoLX
