We arrived at 2:20 & it wasnt until 2:35 that we finally found one.

In fact, it was almost an identical experience to when Sandra Hunt-von Arb went there in September: we were leaving when a female showed up, and then another. No males or other species were seen.

The first Red-tailed Pennant for Santa Barbara County turned up on July 11th of this year --seemingly a vagrant.
But since then more appeared--at least 3 males have been seen off and on over the past 2 1/2 months, including 3 today.
I would love to know if any females are around, and would also love to know how many males have been present during this period.
It's fun to watch the males flying over the pond. They seem to fly closer to the water than the other dragons.
On one occasion I saw a bass leap clean out of the water after a pennant and miss it by a fraction of an inch.
They have the most incredible acceleration, impossible to follow with binoculars even at a distance once they really get going.

*Neon Skimmer L. croceipennis - at least two males chasing each around a small pond along an artificial stream that runs down a portion of the nature center

(this being a recirculating stream, which collects water at the small pond on the bottom of the stream and pump its back up to the head of the stream about 200 feet away).

Also in the pond was an egg-laying female quietly going about her business.

This nature center has been a reliable spot for a few Neon Skimmers for the past 5 or 6 years.

They usually are present here at least through mid-October, but I never made it back to check on them again until the Nov. 8/9 weekend and didnt see any,

even though we had a very warm weekend with high temps in mid to upper 80s.

Damselflies were many; dragons few. The creek still had quite a bit of water with a little flow to it. Best spot was on the creek behind the visitor center. Biggest surprise was Desert Firetail - I've never seen it there before (but that of course doesn't' mean it hasn't been there in the past).

the American River Music Festival near Coloma.

Everyone noticed the Black Saddlebags 'dancing' with the music both days....dozens of them, & on Sun. morning there were dozens of Wandering Gliders.

And just to shine on my "Odeness" - an old female Green Darner with tattered wings came under our shade canopy and spent some time with me!!

It was fun....the Saddlebags did seem to 'dance' (turn) with the music!! I know they don't hear, but it seems that music always attracts them!!

15 mins spent at the pond at the Am. River Resort on Thursday showed 7 species:
Spreadwing (Lestes) sp.
Bluet sp.
Pacific Forktail
Desert Firetail
Co. Green Darner
Western Pondhawk Erythemis collocata

Celise Sharpe & Dennis took us to see some habitat they remembered from a logging operation years ago.
We found it to be some GREAT new petaltail habitat, it's on the way up to Gumboot Lake, west of Mt. Shasta City and off a 'jeep' road to the north It's called Fawn Meadows.

We found lots of darners there, and a spiketail, a few Vivids, but the wildflowers were great.
Then we went onto Gumboot Lake where we only saw one Emerald (distant view), but maybe 560 Green Darners, several Aeshna interrupta and A. umbrosa, a few Northern Spreadwings and some No/Bo Bluets.
We plan to check the Fawn Meadow again next year....the hanging wet meadow, with lots of moss and Darlingtonia, leading into a creek at the bottom looked like perfect Petaltail habitat.

Comanche Reservoir - there were hundreds of saddlebags. Interestingly, there were also very few yellow-jackets in an area where they should have been extremely pesky. I wonder if saddlebags eat them.

There were a few possible Pacific Spiketails, which do eat yellow-jackets, but probably not enough to control the population, I would think. Nothing landed, so I did not get pictures (nor a positive ID on the possible spiketails).

Temperatures above 100F, some breezes

Mariposa

This afternoon I had opportunity to ode an area I've had my eye on for a while.

It's called Bagby Recreation Area and it's where Hwy 49 crosses the Merced River about 15 miles northwest of the town of Mariposa

The first ode I saw was a Pale-faced Clubskimmer which is a new county record.

What amazed me was that there were at least 100 of them.

They were hanging in the grass in the shade of the bridge that goes over the river.

Everywhere I looked in the grass there were several of them.

I have one photo of three hanging side-by-side from a single blade of grass.

In some places there were as many as five or six hanging close to each other.

It seemed like small clouds of them would fly up as I walked through the grass.

I spent over an hour watching and photographing the clubskimmers and as I was leaving another ode caught my eye as it flew past.

Fortunately it landed in view and turned out to be a White-belted Ringtail, also a new Mariposa county record.

The ringtail stayed put long enough for me to get a bad photo before it flew off.  [not bad, gorgeous kb]

Below is the list of odes I took the time to identify during the 90 minutes I was in the area.

Bear Creek - We worked various spots along the creek upstream from the Bear Valley Road turnoff of Hwy 20 to the side canyon creek up to Wilbur Hot Springs,
from around 9:30 a.m. to Noon.  Weather was warm and sunny.

Giant Darner -- a couple of patrolling males at two different spots, and a female appearing to search for ovipositing sites.

Black Saddlebags -- about 8-10 at various spots along the creek.

Spot-winged Glider -- Fairly common along the creek, also seen enroute in open country, including rice fields, flying over the road.

Flame Skimmer -- common along the creek.  Many patrolling males.  We also saw a couple of teneral recent-emergers, ovipositing females, and a tandem pair, the female of which was as red as the male.

Widow Skimmer -- only a single male seen.

Common Whitetail -- one patrolling male and one female away from water seen.

Variegated Meadowhawk -- Extemely abundant, 100s seen along the creek, including tandem and ovipositing pairs.  Also common along the drive foraging over the road in open country.

California Dancer -- fairly common, a number netted.  Probably also saw Vivid Dancer, but none netted, also possibly saw one or two Sooty Dancers.

Familiar Bluet -- fairly common, a few males netted.

Tule Bluet -- fairly common.

Northern Bluet -- a few males netted, probably fairly common.

Pacific Forktail -- modest numbers seen.

Western Forktail -- fairly common.

Black-fronted Forktail -- fairly common.

Overall diversity seemed lower than in past years, but some species were in excellent numbers (Flame Skimmers, Black-fronted Forktails).  Usually Widow Skimmers and Common Whitetails are in much better numbers.

Bishop area

We have a great dragonfly location at which I've seen at least a dozen different species in the last three days, and during the season a total of at least 18 different species (not counting damselflies).

The location is along the Upper McNally Canal just north of Bishop, and just east of Laws.  There is a seldom used maintenance road west of the canal that is flanked by River Willows.

As I walked down that road (about 4;00 p.m.) I saw at least a couple of hundred dragonflies in a couple hundred yards. There were

Band-winged Meadowhawks, tons

Black Saddlebags, scores of both overhead, as well as sitting in the willows.

Darner sp, several hang perching in the willows.

I went back to the same location at 11:00 p.m.; and walked down the road with a bright wide angle flashlight hoping to see any number of dragonflies hanging up in the willows.

I expected to see dragonfly wings glistening in the light.

I expected to see some of them fly out of the willows spooked.  But I saw none, not even one!  What happened to them?  Where do they go at night?  Help!!

Amazingly, I collected another 34 Darner (probably all Variable Darners) exuviae today!
That brings our 23'X30' pond's # of darner exuviae to over 100!!
There have been a few Skimmer exuviae too, probably 12-spots. Also amazingly, there are damsels emerging too, but I still suspect that the darner nymph ate all the polliwogs and salamander pups!!
There are flying 12-spotted Skimmers on the pond now (plus a few tenerals on the 'shore'), with females ovipositing.
And I've found a few teneral Variable Darners too, and had a few adult darners flying. Lots of Pacific Forktails and Northern Bluets too.

Bear Creek - I parked in the normal place along the road where the fence is down and easy access to Creek.

The water is WAY WAY down to just a trickle running. A lot of the creek bed is exposed. Besides being hot and dry, there was hardly any activity.

Libellula saturata - the only thing approaching numbers with maybe 2 or 3 in sight most of the time.

Erythemis collocata - one

Anax walsinghami - maybe 2 (I never saw more than one at any time together)

Hetaerina americana - one

Argia lugens - maybe 3 or 4

Blue damsels (not determined which yet) a lot

The only thing really interesting was Nicole saw a L saturata dip into the water and catch a small minnow which he carried away eating.

I have never seen that before?? Ziad, the other UCD student with us, said he had seen something similar with a dragonfly in his home in Lebanon.

Naturally, it was not something we could have taken a pic of L

We drove through Yosemite on 120 en route to the Mono Lake Chautauqua.

We stopped at Siesta Lake a little west of White Wolf at 8000 feet.  Here we saw many

*Crimson-ringed Whitefaces Leucorrhinia glacialis - by far the most common dragonfly there.  Almost all the whitefaces were male, although there were two mating pairs.

Karen and I have made this trip most years in the last 12 and this is the first time we've seen whitefaces in this location.

The trip is always around the middle of June, although this trip may have been a few days later than usual.

On our return trip on 22 June, we again saw Crimson-ringed Whitefaces around Tuolumne Meadows.  We spent a short time there, but noticed that almost all the whitefaces we saw were female.

I suspect that at Siesta Lake we were seeing males waiting for females to arrive and that at Tuolumne Meadows, we were seeing females getting ready for mating and that the males were elsewhere waiting at appropriate breeding habitat.

But I was also wondering whether there is any evidence that either males or females emerge earlier.  Or is emergence always completely random with respect to gender?  Any comments on timing of emergence would be welcome.

Shasta River @ Hudson Rd., ~6 miles north of Yreka off the old Highway (27?), We accessed just a ~100 yd stretch of the river from 2:30-4:50; 82F

This site is a life-time experience type of place. Almost magical! While you ode, you listen not only to the gurgle of the river (water a pleasant temperature), but also to Chats and Canyon Wrens and various warblers singing.

You see the most activity if you get into the river and walk about. A net or hiking pole is good for stabilization.

River Jewelwing Calopteryx aequabilis about 150. Fantastic sight! Males females, courtship, territorial skirmishes, mating, ovipositing inc. some underwater.

American Rubyspot about a third as any as Jewelwings

Emmas Dancer dozens. Most males still blue, not yet violet/lavender

Vivid Dancer 1-2 up on the road. This is always the case, they are never on the river. They breed in smaller amounts of water

No/Bo Bluets many; small swarms above the underwater vegetation

Western Forktail many mature pruinose females, the most weve ever seen there in ~15 yrs. of visiting this site. Few males.

California Darner several, one male in-hand

*Beaverpond Baskettail Epitheca canis dozens; 8-10 males; one in hand last report 2014

Pacific Clubtail - several just emerged taking maiden flights, many immatures, some on territory; probably ~15 in all

Sinuous Snaketail none found

Flame Skimmer 2 females seen along the road in the rock scarp

Colliers Rest Stop, 4 miles north of the Hudson Rd. site.5:00-5:30, 82F Accessed from either Hwy. 273 or I-5. If all you want to do is tick off species, this is a good site.
Drive to the very end of the reststop and walk along the river fencing and towards the maintenance area.

We went here because we thought wed have a chance at seeing Sinuous Snaketails. It took some searching but we did find one.

Gumboot Lake (G), Cedar Lake (C) both high elevation (6100 & 5750) west of Mt. Shasta City
Larry Wehmeyer Environmental Area (L) - North Shore Rd., Mt. Shasta City
We spent about an hour and a half walking around the Gumboot Lake. The Odes were JUST starting! We saw fewer than half a dozen on the wing, except for tenerals on maiden flights.
But as we walked around the shoreline, looking into the emergent reeds, there were Damsels by the scores and dragons by the dozen!
Most of the dragons were 4-spotted Skimmers, but we were excited to find about 8 American Emeralds emerging and watch one take its maiden flight.
We could see the green metallic shine on the front of the thorax on the emergers, and the white 'waist' line. This turns out to be about 10 days earlier than ever reported before in CA.
There were also some 12-spotted Skimmers emerging, and they didn't show any color at all on the wings yet, but one or two with wing spots were flying on the lake.
We didn't hike up to Little Gumboot Lake, as it was getting quite windy.
No/Bo bluets were emerging in droves, but the wind didn't bode well for them.
We also saw about a dozen mature Pacific Forktail males. Also seen was a mature Bald Eagle
We then drove in to Cedar Lake, but even at 'only' 5,720' it had even less flying. We did see a Co. Green Darner there. You NEED high clearance and 4w drive to go there.
Next we decided to try the L.W. Environmental Center pond just north of Lake Siskiyou as it is at such a lower elevation, ~3,000'.
We added Cardinal Meadowhawk and Black Saddlebags to our day list, which ended at 13 species. We tried for one more low elevation pond, but Hammond Lagoon was dry!!

I had a remarkable couple of visits to the Goleta, CA ranch pond where I am a lunchtime fixture.

Yesterday I took photos of what I presumed to be a very blue bluet--I have never seen CA/Aztec Dancers here, so was just going on what I expected.

So it was a surprise to check out my photos and see what appears to be an Aztec Dancer, which now is confirmed, and is a new county (Santa Barbara) record.

Jim Johnson thinks it's good for Aztec: S2 spot, brownish upper veins on the wings.

Today I went back in the hope of netting one, but I was stopped in my tracks when a pink dragon flew by. Roseate Skimmer! This was one I had only dreamed of seeing locally.

Today was what winter dreams are made up of - longing for this....over 200 Exclamation Damsels counted; I'm certain there were more!
And such a lovely place. Everything was in bloom and the birds were singing....it was like being in heaven!!
In 16 years of visiting this garden, this was the FIRST time we've ever found the Exclamation Damsels breeding in the pond on the south side of the gardens
....normally they were just in and about the mud-banked creek and the Yellow Garden on the north side.
I've had them breed in my own pond, but I thought it was acceptable because I had recirculating water.
I put up an album of photos - http://jalbum.net/en/browse/user/album/1494632
And you can learn more about the gardens - http://sonomahort.com/
I think if you live anywhere in northern CA, a visit would be worthwhile....and we're only 2 miles away!!
Exclamation Damsel - over 200 counted
California Darner - 1 (only -we usually see more)
Cardinal Meadowhawk - 1 pair + 1 lone male
No other Odes seen there today, but in other years we've had a few more species.
It was special to then come home and find our first of year Flame Skimmer waiting to greet us!!

We have been so excited about the Roseate Skimmers that we went back and got more photos.

Saw no less than 10 again, including young males, older males with the nice purple thorax, and a couple females.

It is a nice pond, with tules and cattails..........and a muddy bottom, which the guides say is what the Roseates like.

There is actually an observation deck overlooking the pond, which I think is for bird watching.  You need to get closer to the pond to better observe the dragonflies though.

Two of the sightings were well above the riverbar, in small clearings at dirt road intersections.
